WHAT ARE TERPENES?
Ever wondered what makes your strain smell like lemon, or pine, or skunk? What makes an orange smell citrusy? What contributes to anxiety relief, sleep support, and other benefits CBD can provide?
The secret: terpenes.
Terpenes have numerous roles such as attracting the correct insects to distribute pollen for plant reproduction, warding off, or even killing predators that come near the plant. Some terpenes can be developed from discomfort to the plant, such as being exposed under too much heat. Talk about nature providing a solution for everything!
Different terpenes offer different benefits to us, too.
Did you know that scientists have found and named up to 200 different terpenes in the Cannabis plant and the quantity or type of terpenes range between different strains? Well, before we can discuss those topics more in depth, let’s review the basics about Terpenes and what they do.
Wikipedia states “Terpenes are a large and diverse class of organic compounds, produced by a variety of plants, particularly conifers.” Terpenes are found in many plants (or organic matter) that we use in our day to day life. They have a purpose to help the plant mature properly and regulate growth, and are the purpose for distinctive scents.

Now, let’s go a bit deeper into a few of the more common terpenes and what they are known for.
LIMONENE
Limonene produces the citrus smell in fruits. Limonene is found in our organic plants such as citrus rinds, pine needle oils, juniper, peppermints, and even rosemary. This terpene has been known to help mental focus and overall well being. It also has antifungal and antibacterial properties.
Next time you smell that lemony goodness in our Prime Sunshine flower, remember your terpenes and spread your knowledge!
MYRCENE
Terpenes like Myrcene possess beneficial qualities, especially when combined with other terpenes and cannabinoids.
When you use flower or Full/Broad spectrum hemp products, you are also experiencing the synergistic wellness benefits of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids.
Myrcene (or beta-myrcene) is a monoterpene found in various plants, including fruit and hemp. It is responsible for the earthy fruity aroma found in hemp, flowers, or mangoes. It’s known to relieve pain, support sleep, and may even protect DNA from certain toxins.
Myrcene is found in the oils of citrus fruit, but is also known to smell just like cloves. Myrcene is the most persistently found terpene in hemp. Myrcene is powerful and has been known to block pro-mutagenic carcinogens and has been known to provide a relaxing or calm feeling. Myrcene has been known to increase the psychoactive ness in THC.
Myrcene and Limonene are both terpenes that are classified in having antifungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-carcinogenic properties. Some studies have shown these terpenes helped protect against carcinogens found in smoke.
BETA-CARYOPHYLLENE
Beta-Caryophyllene is another common terpene we want to mention, which is found mostly in herbs and spices, such as black pepper, giving it that unique and spicy flavor. Just like the other two terpenes we mentioned, caryophyllene obtains anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties.
β-Caryophyllene works with the body’s natural receptors and is commonly used in anti-inflammatory practices for dental pain relief or in topical formulas like creams. You can also find this terpene in cloves, lavender, and cinnamon.
PINENE
Pinene transports you straight to the carefree freshness of the woods, through its woody, earthy scent. Pinene is found in pine needles, rosemary, and basil. Pinene will open up your airways and reduce inflammation, contributing to you feeling clearer and refreshed. Pinene’s benefits include:
- Anti-inflammatory
- Bronchodilator (airways)
- Pain-relief
- Anti-anxiety
HUMULENE
The terpene responsible for giving beer it’s deep, herbal, earthy aroma?
Humulene. It can be found in hops, black pepper, and ginseng.
Humulene is known to promote weight loss among other benefits. Humulene is known for its interesting combination of beneficial properties, including:
- Anti-inflammatory
- Anti-bacterial
- Appetite suppressant
