Latest Study Indicates CBD May Prevent COVID-19 Infection

This month, Oregon State University found that cannabis may prevent COVID. Certain hemp compounds have protective effects against COVID-19. The research indicates that these compounds could play a role in infection prevention solutions.

WHAT THE SCIENTISTS SAY ABOUT CANNABIS AND COVID-19

“Orally bioavailable and with a long history of safe human use, these cannabinoids, isolated or in hemp extracts, have the potential to prevent as well as treat infection by SARS-CoV-2.”

As noted in the research, certain cannabinoic acids bind to the “SARS-CoV2 proteins”, blocking them from entering human cells and potentially preventing infection against both the alpha and beta variants of COVID-19.

Cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) were both effective against the SARS-CoV-2 alpha and beta variants.

This isn’t the first study published to indicate that cannabis may protect from COVID-19, as researchers continue to discover the multitude of CBD and hemp benefits. In past studies, patients taking CBD had significantly lower SARS-CoV2 infections compared to controls.

“Our data show CBDA and CBGA are effective against the two variants we looked at, and we hope that trend will extend to other existing and future variants,” van Breeman noted.
